Out of home advertising: Neutralisation of annual GHG emissions

The client:

The client, headquartered in the United Arab Emirates, with offices in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, is a specialist Out-of-Home (OOH) media company renowned for their innovative approach and commitment to pushing the boundaries of advertising.

The client is fully committed to actioning their comprehensive sustainability strategy, with a goal to attain absolute carbon neutrality by 2026. Working on a series of initiatives including recycling of advertising hoardings, improved energy efficiency solutions for digital advertising units and green energy supply, they are working hard to achieve their goals.

After completing their annual sustainability report, which included a GHG assessment of their Scope 1, 2 & 3 emissions, the client required support to offset their residual emissions.

The Process:

Our team had the initial kick-off meeting with the client, to clarify the carbon offsetting process and benefits. We worked with the client to gain an understanding of their business ethos to carefully select community-based carbon offset projects that aligned with their company’s vision.

Four projects were shortlisted by TCCC and presented to the client from different countries, with different vintages and price points for the client to choose from. TCCC also advised on the number of carbon credits that are required to neutralise the annual emissions.

Once the projects were shortlisted, TCCC facilitated the purchasing and batch retirement of the carbon credits on behalf of the client to neutralise their annual emissions.

The Project:

The chosen project was an Energy Efficiency improvement project in Uganda, leading to multiple sustainable development impacts.

Energy efficiency improvement project Uganda

The project involves promotion of improved cooking stoves (ICS) to the people of socially deprived communities in Uganda. The project provides households with clean cooking solutions; thereby, displacing the less efficient traditional cooking stoves from the kitchen with stoves of better efficiency. Replacement of the traditional cooking stoves with ICS reduces the exposure of the family members, specifically women to indoor air pollution and therefore results in savings of health-related expenses.

Because of no smoke from the project stoves, women’s and children’s health improves which will further enhance their availability for other household or livelihood work or education time for children which will contribute towards their quality of life. It also saves fuel and reduces deforestation, which will improve their economic situation and the energy security of society at large.

This is a Gold Standard project, and it caters to Sustainable Development Goals:

The client intends to use the project information and carbon offset retirement certificate for marketing purposes, to showcase their commitments to sustainability and support of international community-based projects that work towards improving quality of life.
