Environmental Impact Assessment
An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) evaluates the potential environmental effects of a project or development before implementation, and is a mandatory step for regulatory clearance across most major jurisdictions.
In India, EIA is governed by the Environment Impact Assessment Notification, 2006, under the Environment Protection Act, 1986, administered by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC). Category A projects require appraisal by the Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) and environmental clearance (EC) from MoEFCC, while Category B projects are assessed at state level by State Environment Impact Assessment Authorities (SEIAAs). In the EU, the process is governed by the EIA Directive (2011/92/EU as amended by 2014/52/EU). Without a structured, technically defensible EIA, projects face regulatory delays, clearance rejection, and increased legal and reputational risk.
Our approach
A structured EIA is conducted in line with applicable regulatory frameworks, whether MoEFCC guidelines, EU EIA Directive requirements, or jurisdiction-specific obligations. The process follows the standard scoping, baseline study, impact prediction, and mitigation hierarchy, resulting in documentation that meets the specific submission requirements of the relevant regulatory authority. Outputs are designed to support timely regulatory approval and robust environmental management through project delivery.
- Scoping of project activities, environmental aspects, and regulatory classification (Category A/B in India; Annex I/II in the EU)
- Baseline environmental data collection across air quality, water, soil, ecology, and socio-economic indicators
- Identification and prediction of potential environmental impacts across construction, operation, and decommissioning phases
- Impact evaluation based on severity, spatial extent, duration, and reversibility
- Development of an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) with mitigation hierarchy and monitoring commitments
- Preparation of regulatory documentation including Form I/IA, EIA report, and public hearing materials (India) or Environmental Statement (EU)
- Support during regulatory submissions, public consultation, and approval processes
Outcomes
Technically defensible EIA report meeting the requirements of the relevant regulatory authority
Alignment with MoEFCC/SEIAA requirements (India), EU EIA Directive, or applicable jurisdiction-specific standards
Reduced risk of regulatory delays, clearance rejection, and post-approval legal challenge
Defined Environmental Management Plan with implementable mitigation measures
Improved environmental performance and monitoring framework across project delivery
