Product Carbon Footprint (PCF)
A Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) quantifies the total greenhouse gas emissions associated with a specific product across its lifecycle, calculated in line with the GHG Protocol Product Standard and ISO 14067:2018.
PCF is increasingly required by multinational customers to support their own Scope 3 Category 1 (Purchased Goods and Services) reporting under the GHG Protocol Scope 3 Standard. The EU's CBAM and ESPR are further driving demand for verified product-level emissions data. Without a credible PCF aligned to a recognised methodology, suppliers risk exclusion from procurement processes, inability to respond to customer data requests via platforms such as EcoVadis or CDP Supply Chain, and reduced competitiveness in carbon-sensitive markets.
Our approach
A structured PCF is calculated in line with the GHG Protocol Product Standard and ISO 14067:2018, with system boundaries, allocation rules, and data quality requirements defined at the outset. Primary data collection is prioritised across material inputs and manufacturing, supplemented by secondary data from ecoinvent or sector-specific emission factor databases. The focus is on producing accurate, comparable, and audit-ready product-level emissions data usable for customer disclosures, CBAM reporting, and reduction strategies.
- Definition of product scope, system boundaries, and lifecycle stages per GHG Protocol Product Standard and ISO 14067
- Collection and validation of primary activity data across material inputs, manufacturing, logistics, and end-of-life
- Emissions calculation across all relevant lifecycle stages with documented emission factor selection
- Allocation methodology selection and application for shared processes, co-products, and recycled content
- Data quality assessment and uncertainty analysis per ISO 14067 requirements
- Identification of key emission hotspots at product level and improvement opportunities
- Preparation of PCF documentation aligned with customer, CBAM, and regulatory disclosure requirements
Outcomes
