Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) evaluates the environmental impact of a product or system across its full lifecycle — from raw material extraction through manufacturing, distribution, use, and end-of-life — in line with ISO 14040 and ISO 14044.
For organisations supplying into EU markets, LCA underpins compliance with the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), product-level EPDs (Environmental Product Declarations) under EN 15804 (construction) and ISO 14025, and Green Claims Directive substantiation requirements. In supply chains, customers increasingly request credible LCA data to support their own Scope 3 disclosures and product carbon footprint calculations. Without a structured, peer-reviewed LCA, environmental claims lack legal defensibility and product-level sustainability positioning lacks credibility.
Our approach
A structured LCA is conducted in line with ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards, using recognised life cycle inventory (LCI) databases including ecoinvent, GaBi, and sector-specific national databases. Impact assessment covers relevant environmental categories per ILCD/EN 15804 methodology including global warming potential (GWP), acidification, eutrophication, water scarcity, and resource depletion. Critical review is conducted where required for external communication and third-party verification. Outputs are structured to support product strategy, regulatory alignment, EPD publication, and customer reporting.
- Definition of goal, scope, functional unit, and system boundaries per ISO 14040 requirements
- Lifecycle modelling approach selection (attributional or consequential) aligned to study purpose
- Collection and validation of primary foreground data and secondary background data from ecoinvent or equivalent LCI databases
- Lifecycle inventory (LCI) analysis across all inputs, outputs, and elementary flows
- Life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) using EN 15804/ILCD or ReCiPe characterisation factors across relevant impact categories
- Identification of environmental hotspots and high-impact lifecycle stages
- Critical review by an independent third-party panel for studies intended for external communication per ISO 14044 clause 6.2
- Development of recommendations for product design, process improvement, and supplier engagement
Outcomes
ISO 14040/14044-compliant LCA with full methodology documentation and critical review where required
Quantified environmental profile across key impact categories (GWP, water, acidification, resource depletion)
Identification of high-impact lifecycle stages and actionable improvement opportunities
Readiness for EPD publication under EN 15804 or ISO 14025, and Green Claims Directive substantiation
Stronger basis for sustainable product design, customer disclosures, and Scope 3 supply chain data
